Inked and Proud

Have you heard about TokiDoki's Tattooed Barbie yet? That's her.  Personally, I'm a huge fan of TokiDoki.  I have all of the Cactus Pups and a handful of his other creations.  In fact, something on the box of Sandy (one of the Cactus Friends) was the inspiration for the name "Happy Cactus." But that's neither here nor there.

What is here is the horrible comments that people are posting in response to this Barbie. I read the article that was in Salon first and liked it.  And then the comments. And then I got angry.  Whether you like tattoos or not, you have no right to make such horrible accusations about someone's character based on what they choose to put on their body.

I only have 2 small tattoos but I want more. All of my tattoos (current and planned) have been thought about and carefully chosen- either for aesthetic purposes or for meaning.  And not, as one commenter so closed-mindly suggests, "during or after a night of intoxicated partying."  In fact, I don't think I know a single person to which this applies (except for my husband, but that's a long story).  The stigma that tattoos are only for people who live on the "fringes of society" no longer applies, but unfortunately some people still cling to it and are probably teaching their children to stereotype others as well.

Tattoos have become a part of main stream culture.  And like it or not, the generation that's now becoming parents has tattoos.  And a lot of them.  Today's moms look a lot more like this Barbie than the "traditional" Barbie and no amount of name calling and character slandering is going to change that.
